BLUE LIGHT SPECIAL - Hammer use to hammer nails, with "bionic" prosthetic hand, poses tricky Catch-22 for Cybathlon 2020 [review]

The Cybathlon 2020 race rules confront us with two interesting Catch-22 aspects:

-hammering (if not other dangerous) activity that is not endorsed by "bionic" hand manufacturers

-use of damaged / perforated covers, not endorsed by Ossur [link]

A hammer, particularly a cheap or small one, even more so than a heavy dangerous "real" hammer, is an unlikely tool to use with an ~80 000 USD myoelectric "bionic" device that is specifically built to sustain only the lightest of work. And the subject of hammering, technically, as arm amputee with a prosthetic arm, has become relevant since the Cybathlon 2020 directors [link] have taken it upon themselves to make it a "discipline".

STOP - HAMMER TIME?

Promembro - Schweizer Lobbyisten wollen Hightech-Prothesen "legalisieren"

BLUE LIGHT SPECIAL: Pitch black cynicism in the Cybathlon 2020: "the role of a disabled person" [not funny]

"With that, visitors of the Cybathlon Experience (TM) can test the role of a disabled person" (können in die Rolle einer behinderten Person schlüpfen) (Oral presentation: "CYBATHLON – bewegt Mensch und Technik", 5.15pm–6.00pm, Dr. Roland Sigrist, Cybathlon, ETH Zurich, Raum E 1.2) -- I was there, one among the 8 people that made the audience of this "sold out" Cybathlon talk; amputees are there for "entertainment" (clearly one of the requirements written on a slide in the presentation) (ist es das, was wir als behinderte Personen spielen? eine Rolle, ja?).

After defining a remarkably strange prosthetic arm race, the makers of the Cybathlon 2020 now start to openly bathe us in their pitch-black cynicism.

Why? Pressing question.

Until we can all be and live as Cyborgs, transhumanist or otherwise freely functional people of this earth, also Reddit and such communities will have to learn that it is NOT cool to call disabled people "gore."

They just did that though.

An upcoming conference seems to hit more precisely than any other contemporary "spectacle" - from body "hacking" (featuring people that quite simply wear stock item devices) over "workshops" where participants are filmed or photographed (but do not get systematic solutions to all aspects that are shown) to "bionic" limb featurettes - the subject at the very core of the current preoccupation of society with disability is not help or support but focus. Support may only be part of making things appear right.

Actual, true, and dedicated improvement or help is not rendered. It is at best shown as sugar coating, thrown in as minimal excuse, offered as pretense, but not made a didactic or technical focus. We now need to delineate real work, real support from sugar coated symbolism that has different goals and purposes.

What is *featured* here - in that conference - is the "spectacle" aspect. What is featured in some odd "bionic" arm workshop is exactly that: they call it "help" - but they invite television to show how good they are and the focus is not on actual function but on "how it looks and appears to the public". They call it "support", but its main feature is a live stream of discussions on media channels all the while the hook remains the best prosthetic ever.

Wrong. I not only do not recommend to go there, I recommend to not go there.

The mutual viewing of who of us when regarding each other is more, or less, human has a potentially big impact on societal cohesion.

Prosthetic arms today - at least inasmuch as the "bionic" arms hype is concerned - are by far a more societal than practical aspect, so these aspects play a massive role. Once even technical researchers give up honest technical work in their attempt to reach for the fame and society grapes, they start to attach themselves to a dynamic that is neither obvious nor cool. I already strongly advised arm amputees to abandon that social dynamic actively as not doing that will result in actual problems (link). But it starts smooth and nicely before escalating into what one might actually call "the Voight-Kampff chambers of hell of symbolic attribution in attempting mutual acceptance as human".

Filmmakers and apologizing about the WRONG CAST (review)

Filmmakers apparently "apologized for a white cast" after making the movie "Gods of Egypt" (link;link;link;link;link). Lionsgate Studios reportedly released this statement:

We recognise that it is our responsibility to help ensure that casting decisions reflect the diversity and culture of the time periods portrayed. In this instance, we failed to live up to our own standards of sensitivity and diversity, for which we sincerely apologise. Lionsgate is deeply committed to making films that reflect the diversity of our audiences. We have, can and will continue to do better.

That is a funny statement. Let us look at some movies to help us understand film industry a bit better. For all I know, arm or leg amputees can be "used" the way any director sees fit, stereotyped in mischievous, evil and painful ways, and no one else gives a shit. That's where it's at.

Is Karate for amputees called 'partial arts'? - [link]

It was alleged recently that one required "technical" prostheses in order to "participate in international sports competitions" when having a physical handicap.

Here: [http://www.myhandicap.ch/cybathlon.html] "Der Cybathlon eröffnet Menschen mit Behinderung die Möglichkeit, an einem internationalen Wettkampf teilzunehmen, was bisher aufgrund der restriktiven Regeln gegenüber dem Einsatz von Technik im internationalen Sport ausgeschlossen war" - The Cybathlon opens up participation in international competitions to people with disabilities, which due to restrictive regulations was so far not possible in international sports. (...) -- Text: Prof. Dr. Robert Riener, ETH Zürich & Uniklinik Balgrist - 04/2013

With this preposterous and arrogant statement, these individuals go too far.

The ultimate currency is respect - and this statement here is quite simply the pure opposite.

This is, superbly politely put, total nonsense. What it really means and is, that goes a lot further. But to give a short overview:

  • The Cybathlon is the last thing that we need in order to open up any possibilities as far as we can see now. There are a few roboticists, admitted, but then what. What do they "open"? Worse, since when did they open anything for arm amputees?
  • The individuals behind the text do not know shit from shinola inasmuch as international sports is concerned. They have no idea about actual regulations in sports inasmuch as participation of handicapped people in international competitions is concerned. That is obvious. Why then write new regulations? If they do not even have an idea about current ones? Is that fundamentally necessary?
  • In fact, they probably know shit about sports and prostheses. Or let us rephrase. What prosthetic arms - model, make, year, motor type, etc. - actually and factually aid and support (rather than hamper), say, freestyle sprint swimming over, say, 50 meters? Was that a rhetorical question?

They may be right about some sports and about some people with some handicaps, at certain occasions. But written as generalization as above, they clearly overstep their boundaries. There are two simple case examples that quite simply prove otherwise, and a number of further illustrative examples, without any attempt to be complete or comprehensive.

One always wonders how people are set off against each other, how people distinguish themselves from other people, or more how they set themselves off from what they see as human background, from people that might be there but not quite. I would know, because being handicapped automatically zooms me to that "human background class" to a large number of people that formerly would address me as a person. And then they do not any more.

As the same happens with homeless people, as it appears, the following video is more than illustrative. It is also depressing, extremely sad, and super realistic.
