[cross post]

I decided to build a mount for my Apple iPhone 4's TomTom car kit. I wanted it to be neatly outside the front window area (visual clutter of that area can be a hazard) and I wanted it tucked somewhere centrally so a passenger could help playing with it when on the road.

Obviously the mount needs to be completely rattle free, flexible to access and rewire or replace cables, mount or remove the iPhone and access the device with ease. There should be no screws or glue needed so fast and complete removal of all installations are a must. This is usually best achieved by precise fitting of inserts that neither wiggle nor slide.

Also, it appeared that both audio and 12V jacks were located along the middle, with the 12V jack being b0th in the middle console and the arm rest, and the 3,5mm stereo audio jack in the arm rest of the car.

The model is a standard Subaru Impreza 1.5L Swiss Edition 2010.

Ironing - one handed, or with prosthetic hook or hand [choice of iron]

A while back, I was asked to come up with footage to document how my prosthetic hook would work (or not work) when handling an iron and when ironing shirts [link].

It was then a question whether re-design of an iron would help people with prosthetic hooks. I have no idea why they restricted the research for industrial design to hooks. After all, there are far more people that live with one functioning hand after, say, strokes or paralysis than there are amputees.

Since then I started to trouble shoot the situation myself and found that with my steaming iron (regular plastic body steam iron), (a) the grip that was made of hard plastic also slipped out of my (non-disabled) hand, particularly when I was not paying attention, mostly because using the left hand for me is still awkward, (b) the iron was heavy no matter what hand or hook I was lifting it with, (c) its plastic housing broke when it fell because it was not built to last.

Mini Cooper - power steering, garage attitude and my own repair [how to]

After a serious winter with lots of driving, I was not too surprised to see my power steering fail on a day where I was about to take the car to the well established Titan Garage Zuerich (Badenerstrasse 527, Zuerich) anyway. There were a number of occassions where the car was caught in heavy snow or sliding on icy roads as unavoidable consequence of winter travel, and as cautious as one may drive, one wonders how the car holds up. Turns out it doesn't.

A Mini Cooper with a failing power steering is serious business. With two hands, this thing is impossible to steer then. With one hand, no freaking way. So I tweaked my way back into getting that power steering back up luckily - and asked the dispatch person to also check what was wrong there, and if possible, to please fix it.

Driving with a disability that requires a prosthetic arm is a peculiar subject.

Car seatbelts have these nice clips that are so useful for belts. The belts are set to the correct length and the rest of the life one just has to clonk in or clonk out.

So I decided that that was what I wanted.

Which watch?

I have issues regarding watches.

I will not be able to wear just about any wrist band as I have to be able to operate it using stump ot prosthesis. A heavy or large watch is not optimal as I tend to overuse my complete left arm anyway. And the watch should be reasonably water proof as the last thing I want to do is to take it off / put it on all the time. I do lots of sports and so luxury watches are not exactly what I will be buying.

Here is what works.

I drive a Mini Cooper 2007. However, the way Mini BMW went about their hard to tackle electronic problems were not transparent or easy to understand.

The Mini Cooper 2007 can be a somewhat expensive but beautiful car to drive as an amputee. Since Mini BMW Switzerland confronted me with a difficult situation (they recommended modification through dealers but appeared to insufficiently document these guys with the effect that modification cost ran up comparatively high), I am detailing the experience from my point of view here. Please consider getting in touch with Mini BMW beforehand and consider other vehicles as well. Volkswagen, for example, have their own product line for disability modifications.

If you look for more tips about modifying / using a bicycle with a below elbow amputation, check links regarding "bike" (LINK), "biking" (LINK), and "bike mods" (LINK). There is a longer article in German regarding bicycle modification (LINK).

My bicycle modifications were installed by the tech wiz bike shop CYCLE SHARK in Zuerich. They took time and knowhow and could have taken this even further. I required gear switch modifications. And they threw in an arm rest.

This is the first in a series of posts related to bikes and biking.

I ride my bike with limited right sided support (no support if I don't wear the prosthesis). In essence I need adaptation for one handed bicycle control, for one handed bicycle braking and for one handed gear switching / control (in my instance, left handed). Because of that, I need good brake control.
