As someone like me who has gone on about appearances of my prosthetic hands quite a bit, this of course is interesting! So here is the study (<a title=\"Poliakoff et al. Previous research has explored the existence of this effect for faces and whole bodies, while here we explore responses to photographs of real and artificial hands. In keeping with the notion of an uncanny valley, prosthetic hands that were of intermediate human-likeness were given the highest ratings of eeriness. However, within the categories of hands, ratings of eeriness reduced as human-likeness increased, suggesting a more complex pattern. Further investigation of this effect will be of relevance to the design of prosthetic limbs and could be used to test theories of the uncanny valley and social perception with simple stimuli.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_was_first_with_this\"><\/span>Who was first with this?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Claim\"><\/span>Claim<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;The research to date has used faces or whole bodies, <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">and here we investigate for the first time an uncanny valley for hand stimuli<\/span>. This is not only of theoretical interest, but also has implications for the design of prosthetics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Facts\"><\/span>Facts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>That this is the first research being done using hand stimuli really is a bold claim, however, it is untrue.<\/p>\n<p>On two accounts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>they were not first, and<\/li>\n<li>they did not use hand stimuli<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The first very intentionally designed non-human surface appearance of a shape resembling a human hand in still images but also approximating one in motion should probably go back <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/tech\/?p=239\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to Jacques Monestier, and the hand is called the Monestier hand (published here on December 2nd, 2009, four years ago)<\/a>. The research that went into that result has been done by Lescoeur and Monestier, as we have to presume.<\/p>\n<p>Then, there was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/patents\/USD595854\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Otto Bock&#8217;s patented Michelangelo hand glove<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/patents\/USD595854\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">USD595854<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/patents\/CA122162S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CA122162S<\/a>) designed by Peter Kuschnigg (July 7th, 2009). This remained a prosthetic design that no one wore at the time, simply because Otto Bock apparently was unable to roll out any usable prototypes &#8211; not until years later.<\/p>\n<p>The first person to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">systematically<\/span> go out and use an intentional mix of &#8220;human shape&#8221; (by wearing a prosthetic hand rather than a hook device) and &#8220;non-human surface appearance&#8221;(by varying that through different means) in a practical researching manner, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">across a whole range of appearances<\/span>, using actual prosthetic hands, rather than stimuli, as in the paper under discussion here, still image stimuli, that was me.<\/p>\n<p>I was doing that, at a time, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.ch\/search?q=bertolt+meyer+ilimb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bertolt Meyer<\/a> (we went for a beer where he saw my still freshly painted Becker red hand live on September 2nd, 2009, way before he started telling everybody how much he liked non-human appearances in his prosthetic arm such as on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/tech\/?p=448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TV show somewhere between April 15th and June 24th 2011<\/a>) still tried to get an extremely life-like silicone hand glove, and when the pinnacle of prosthetic hand and arm existence contained a manually copied and painted surface appearance of the remaining limb (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pillet.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pillet silicone arms<\/a> range around 30&#8217;000 Euro).<\/p>\n<p>The person to spearhead aggressive non-human surface experiments on a wider scale using their own prosthetic hand was me all along, and no one else.<\/p>\n<p>Sorry to say guys, if you want things done earlier, you have to get up earlier.<\/p>\n<p>It was me who literally single-handedly came up with the bold non-human colors combined with human shapes, and who charged forward with a series of experiments up to talking Centri into actually fabricating small series of these (link below), and, getting my prostetist to get the Swiss importer into getting a transparent version (see Phantom hand, below).<\/p>\n<p>Let us recap.<\/p>\n<p>I was the only lone person to go entirely ballistic with color and shape variation when I started in 2008\/9. Up to then, &#8220;maximal cosmetic alignment&#8221; with &#8220;natural skin&#8221; was still regarded as the pinnacle of upper extremity prosthetics.<\/p>\n<p>My line of research was web-published all along, under the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/tech\/?cat=64\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Red Hand Series \/ Technical Design Series&#8221;<\/a> category. We were on the phone also to discuss particular appearances. Since then, chromed sockets appear to be very much <em>en vogue<\/em>. That was after I had produced a chromed cuckoo clock, had that up on my wall at home, only to have an avid arts collector and seller tell me that that piece of art was really great. So, chromed made their entrance into prosthetic sockets then, by way of me forwarding it to Dan, who developed the technique to apply shiny chromed appearance to prosthetic sockets.<\/li>\n<li>Spare Parts art exhibitions of colored artworks on prosthetic legs (Priscilla Sutton, Brisbane 2010 and London 2012).<\/li>\n<li>A German prosthetist, Frank Purk, started to publish his works starting in 2011 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.frankpurk.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>OpenProsthetics, OpenBionics and whoever else now promote colored, at times red, hands. This was distinctly not their invention, though.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My concept studies helped to inspire a range of follow-up experiments that <em>actually referenced<\/em> it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Super Prosthetics project by Becky Pilditch, Graduation Show 2010, category &#8220;Innovation Design Engineering&#8221;, Royal College of Art, London, United Kingdom of Great Britain (first mail and mention of Red Hand series November 2nd 2009, read here published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/tech\/?p=267\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">January 23rd, 2010<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>APART diploma design thesis, 2012, by Doreen Haedicke, was only in part inspired by the Red Hand experiment, however initially there was interest in referencing some of the Red Hand design (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/tech\/?p=2319\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>ArmWear &#8211; Cool Prosthetics &#8211; Graduation Report September 2010, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands (review published here <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/tech\/?p=463\">October 29th, 2013<\/a>) [<a class=\"papercite_bibcite\" href=\"#paperkey_1\">2<\/a>].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I am not saying that I once thought about something and kept it to myself. I am saying that we all worked our butts off to get somewhere with this. There is sweat and, possibly behind the scenes, a lot of exploration through dialog, behind this here. The amount of footwork I did using real prosthetic hands in a real 3D world that we live in is quite considerable. To then say that hand stimuli as typed up by Poliakoff et al. (2013) would be the first experiment ever in relation to prosthetic hand appearance research, that is simply wrong.<\/p>\n<p>You need to reference all of us here, you really would want to do that.<\/p>\n<p>And you need to use prosthetic hand stimuli. Not photography. A &#8220;hand stimulus&#8221; is one that has hand in it, and we know it is a hand when it can hold an object. My prosthetic hand can hold an object so it is that. Consult with Magritte on what is or is not a pipe vice versa the image of a pipe (clue: if it is a pipe, you can smoke it; an image of a pipe, not so much).<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hand_versus_simulacra\"><\/span>Hand versus simulacra<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Claims\"><\/span>Claims<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Overall, we have demonstrated that prosthetic hands that fall short of being human are rated as being eerie.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;(Title) Can looking at a hand make your skin crawl? Peering into the uncanny valley for hands. &#8220;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Facts-2\"><\/span>Facts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The authors demonstrated that a number of viewers found <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">still photos<\/span> of prosthetic hands eerie. Still photos. Not prosthetic hands.<\/p>\n<p>There is a difference! A prosthetic hand is one if you can also squeeze yourself with it. A pipe is one if you can smoke it (check Magritte).<\/p>\n<p>With that mix-up or confusion, the authors prove that they are lost within the various levels of facsimile her. And in the context of prosthetic hands, I would argue that error is conceptually fatal.<\/p>\n<p>The Krukenberg arm &#8211; another option to consider for below elbow amputees &#8211; is one of the most underused options, quite simply <em>because it looks horrible on still photos<\/em>. It does not look horrible in real life, when seen in true action, when moved, when animated, dynamically used &#8211; conversely, people with Krukenberg arms tend to get <em>positive compliments,<\/em> and the vast majority is <em>very happy<\/em> with these [<a class=\"papercite_bibcite\" href=\"#paperkey_2\">3<\/a>] (they have <em>a mind boggling acceptance rate over 90%<\/em>, which strongly contrasts with a constantly <em>low prosthetic arm acceptance rates of a realistic ~10-15% estimate<\/em> across arm amputees that have lifetime cover of state insurance). With a Krukenberg arm costing some 15&#8217;000 to 18&#8217;000 CHF for decades of unlimited 24\/7 grip function with a very high quality, and a prosthetic arm running up some 300&#8217;000 to 700&#8217;000 CHF over decades of maintenance with a relatively limited function, <em>that visual and analytical error &#8211; confusing still photo rating with &#8220;actual ratings&#8221; &#8211; costs our insurances millions of dollars<\/em> that are, technically speaking, utterly wasted. To play along with that type of methodical error is something even the most neoliberal attitudes have to be able to afford themselves, that even the most unfair people with regards to who gets to pay for insanely priced myoelectric junk, has to pay dearly for, something that does not even come for free to these people, not even in their dreams.<\/p>\n<p>Just because researchers and doctors cannot wrap their head around various levels of visual and social estrangement, and simply because a fear of disabled people seems to make them prefer photographs over the real people, does not lick the uncomfortable reality away that realities are, photos are not. Particularly in upper extremity appearances. So as it seems, these authors happened to not have a bunch of arm amputees on their hand (bwahaha &#8230; &#8220;hand&#8221;, get it?) to perform actual &#8220;hand stimuli&#8221; research &#8211; they had to use cheaply assembled photos.<\/p>\n<p>Now, seeing as of they used a bunch of photos that they also put into the study, everyone can follow me in considering that a rather uncritically performed technical study aspect [<a class=\"papercite_bibcite\" href=\"#paperkey_0\">1<\/a>] becomes relevant when considering the actual prosthetic hand photographs (Figure 1, middle [<a class=\"papercite_bibcite\" href=\"#paperkey_0\">1<\/a>]): did you realize that <em>the black background<\/em> (photos 1,2,3,4,5, 6 [<a class=\"papercite_bibcite\" href=\"#paperkey_0\">1<\/a>]) <em>correlated with a considerably eerier score<\/em> (figures drawn from diagram: 5,6 +\/- 0,8 [<a class=\"papercite_bibcite\" href=\"#paperkey_0\">1<\/a>]) than the white background (4,2 +\/- 1,1 [<a class=\"papercite_bibcite\" href=\"#paperkey_0\">1<\/a>]).<\/p>\n<p>In other words, as photo motive, me and my hosed arm seem to look better with white than with black as background.<\/p>\n<p>Fitting a logistic regression curve with data taken directly from the study [<a class=\"papercite_bibcite\" href=\"#paperkey_0\">1<\/a>] and feeding through my own statistics (see diagram below, whole model test p=0.0401, SAS JMP) results in a correlation whereas for prosthetic hand photos, a white background has a &gt; 90% chance of yielding eeriness scores below ~3,4, whereas a black background has a &gt;90% chance of effecting an eeriness score above ~6, with statistical significance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/review-poliakoff2013-backg.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2271 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/review-poliakoff2013-backg.png\" alt=\"review-poliakoff2013-backg\" width=\"329\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/review-poliakoff2013-backg.png 329w, https:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/review-poliakoff2013-backg-300x234.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 329px) 100vw, 329px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So the missing distinction between &#8220;hand&#8221; and &#8220;photo of a hand&#8221; with the overlooked \/ uncontrolled variable of image background color has a measurable impact on the results. When evaluating still photos, background color can (statistically significantly) impact the result you would wish to get from the hand appearance only.<\/p>\n<p>This is probably well known throughout the industry. Possibly, advertising photographers can tell us all about such.<\/p>\n<p>Current prosthetic hand webpages and advertising (including such expensive attempts such as Touchbionics&#8217; iLimb, Otto Bock&#8217;s Michelangelo or RSL Steeper&#8217;s BeBionic) all demonstrate their products on white backgrounds (with the notable exception of the golden and mystical looking Monestier hand design, which also manages to make &#8220;prosthetic hands&#8221; look good in front of a black background).<\/p>\n<p>Besides, prosthetic hand constructors these days work with trying to get the dynamics of hands right, that much more than their photographic appearance. Also, the impact of robotic hand motion has been studied already [<a class=\"papercite_bibcite\" href=\"#paperkey_3\">4<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_prosthetic_hands_exactly_were_used\"><\/span>What prosthetic hands, exactly, were used?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Claim-2\"><\/span>Claim<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Therefore, we obtained ratings of photographic images of real, prosthetic, and mechanical hands.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Facts-3\"><\/span>Facts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Actual prosthetic hands and grippers are (<strong>a<\/strong>) passive \/ cosmetic, (<strong>b<\/strong>) body powered or (<strong>c<\/strong>) myoelectric. They are all equally real, however. Hit one against your head if you do not believe me and discuss how the bruise is not real. Get it? Real? Tangible? Physical? The correct delineation of a prosthetic hand is a human biological or anatomical hand. But a prosthetic hand becomes real even at the moment you cannot pay for one: that is how real they are.<\/p>\n<p>That is a distinction that is known for decades, and those are prosthetic options that are being built since decades.<\/p>\n<p>This study waltzes over this fact and neither declares make, brand, nor choice for a particular hand&#8217;s appearance. Due to lacking standards in appearance of these hands (ambient versus specular light, angle, et cetera), we cannot know how shininess, surface structure and other aspects impacted the eeriness that may be perceived when really facing one of these hands.<\/p>\n<p>Also, current prosthetic hands can be equipped with non-human surface options both as part of stock orders or as part of customization. I got some of my custom colored PVC gloves made by Centri (Sweden) &#8211; also a well publicized fact that is accessible for anyone that cares to look for it.<\/p>\n<p>So restricting one&#8217;s perceptive research to ill-defined photographs that lack current scope, that lack technical description, that lack comparable definiton for photographic aspects, that lacks correct adjectives, that lacks adequate source references &#8211; that strikes me as not so interesting. Furthermore, customer-side interventions, whether self made (such as my own test series, see above) or customization professionals (Dan Horkey of GTOPI, to name the obvious) are well established and well known if not infamous throughout amputee communities.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wrap_up\"><\/span>Wrap up<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Also and after examining the above mentioned issues, this study shows (again) that<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>academic research continues to be somewhat pointless when related to the appearance of prosthetic arms despite several attempts to point it out to researchers that they are indeed living in their own bubble (as long they do not stop to live in their own bubble, that is), so academic studies such as continue to be mysterious, strange, unexpected, sending a chill up my spine; meantime, I wrote testing requirements also for appearance (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/tech\/?p=3295\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>) and subsequently was invited to publish a commentary regarding test requirements in the leading commercial journal (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oandp.com\/articles\/2014-08_14.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>existing prosthetic hand test series and their anecdotal results from real experience are happily ignored by academic researchers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"paperkey_0\" class=\"papercite_entry\">[1]                   E.
