This is something people don&#8217;t know. To wear a Becker hand, all you need is a body powered arm.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Water glass<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These days, people appear to show off their prosthetic &#8220;bionic attempts&#8221; by &#8211; don&#8217;t laugh &#8211; holding on to a water glass.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, sure, But, why? Is that so important, so hard, so decisive to spend thousands of dollars to hold on to a freaking glass, can or bottle? I don&#8217;t get it.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, let&#8217;s start here.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/images\/adl\/grip-waterglass1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/images\/adl\/grip-waterglass2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/images\/adl\/grip-waterglass3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/images\/adl\/grip-waterglass4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/images\/adl\/grip-waterglass5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beer time<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hooks and myo arms are alright &#8211; but there are absolutely no control and drop issues with body powered Becker hands. Conversely, dropping a beer glass with a myo arm is a realistic risk that you run. Cheers though.<\/p>\n<p>The grip that you see here? Fingers wrapping around the glass? That&#8217;s called an adaptive grip.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/images\/becker\/beer1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/images\/becker\/beer2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/images\/becker\/beer3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/images\/becker\/beer4.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Surface finish and looks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I already tried some colors. When I paint it white, people will ask me whether they saw that hand on TV and whether I am indeed wearing the latest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/tech\/?cat=51\" target=\"_blank\">Otto Bock Michelangelo hand<\/a>. I am not sure this is a compliment so I&#8217;d tell them, no, this one is even better.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/images\/becker\/b2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/images\/becker\/b6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Becker hand is a lot lighter, a hell of a lot sturdier and far more available &#8211; 24\/7 without recharge, mail order, you name it &#8211; than competitor products (if at all there are any).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/images\/becker\/b7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/images\/becker\/b9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Grabbing tooth brush<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Adaptive grips require cool mechanic setups, not necessarily the extra weight caused by myoelectric controls. This is one of the great misconceptions of our times.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/images\/becker\/b11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Becker hand grip is as adaptive as they ever come. It has better articulation, functionally, than some &#8220;bionic&#8221; hands.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/images\/becker\/b12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I am sure you would want your tooth brush to be gripped as well as my tooth brush is. My tooth brush is very happy about this and still works as it has not fallen down too often over the years now.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/images\/becker\/b13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Becker hand with CENTRI cosmetic PVC glove<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even a worn down PVC glove (CENTRI) works perfectly well with the Becker Imperial hand, here an illustrative example with me carrying the espresso with my prosthetic hand and using my left (intact) hand to open \/ unlock all the doors along our work place&#8217;s security corridors.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.swisswuff.ch\/images\/becker\/b14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Grabbing my wallet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I had not had such a firm grip of my wallet since the amputation.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hosmer&#039;s Becker Imperial Hand  - grabbing wallet\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FFdV3y23jwM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Grabbing round objects<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I started to grab round items very early into using this hand. This is a demo just minutes after obtaining my first Becker Lock Grip hand.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see I am quite hesitant to this new grip. Will it hold? If you can do that, you can fry your own eggs :) As you see I am not only one hungry person (6 eggs as part of my breakfast) but also, opening eggs that way is a no-brainer (check the frying pan &#8211; no accidents there). If you must know &#8211; the round white thing to the right (in the frying pan) &#8211; that&#8217;s not an egg shell, that is an onion (another round object that I sliced up using the Becker hand).<\/p>\n<p>Precisely this is why I am not sure the DARPA invested their tax payer&#8217;s money correctly by *solely* supporting myoelectric technology. Otto Bock also seems to currently neglect the development of sophisticated hand or hooks for cable controlled arms. This is wrong in my view. Cable controlled arms go a far way. You just have to walk that path. This arm is light, robust, does not at all require batteries or electricity, it is very affordable and it also looks technical. The Becker Lock Grip hand can be also ordered customized. If you neglect or ignore this, how are you gonna fry your eggs? Not all hands do that similarly well.
